Internship
Commercial Banking Analyst | CitiBank

Commercial Banking Summer Analyst Program

Institute: CitiBank
Location: New York City, NY
Duration: June 2, 2025 – August 8, 2025
Program: Commercial Banking Summer Analyst Program

During the summer of 2025, I had the opportunity to intern at Citibank in New York City as part of the Commercial Banking Summer Analyst Program. Citi is one of the most global financial institutions in the world, operating in over 160 countries and serving multinational corporations, mid-sized companies, and institutional clients. Being part of such an international organization was especially meaningful to me given my interest in global business.
As a Commercial Banking Summer Analyst, I supported a team that primarily worked with U.S.-based companies operating internationally. My responsibilities included assisting with financial analysis, reviewing client performance data, preparing materials for client meetings and internal presentations, and conducting research on industries and companies to support strategic decisions.

In addition to my daily responsibilities, I completed two major program-wide projects. The first involved identifying and scouting a potential new client and presenting my findings to the head of my team. The second, and more challenging project, was a group assignment where we created and presented a full “green-light memo.” In this presentation, we evaluated whether Citi should finance a client by analyzing the company’s financial health, economic positioning, and industry outlook. This project pushed me to think critically and understand the bigger picture behind lending decisions.
The role required strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. I often worked under tight deadlines, which strengthened my time management skills and taught me how to stay calm and focused under pressure.

Beyond my core responsibilities, I made it a priority to build relationships across the firm. I scheduled coffee chats with as many people as possible, including senior bankers, including Managing Directors and global team leaders, to better understand the structure of commercial banking and Citi’s international strategy. These conversations gave me insight into different career paths and helped me feel more confident navigating a large organization.
I also participated in networking events and intern development sessions that focused on leadership, career progression, and Citi’s global culture. Through both my work and these conversations, I saw firsthand how collaboration functions across offices and countries, particularly when working with international clients.

This internship was both a professional and personal growth experience. After recently studying abroad in Florence, I was especially aware of the cultural differences between business practices in the United States and Italy. In New York, the work environment was fast-paced, performance-driven, and highly competitive. In contrast, my experience in Italy emphasized relationship-building and work-life balance. Working at a global bank like Citi showed me how important cultural awareness is in international business. I realized that technical skills alone are not enough, but adaptability, communication, and cultural sensitivity are just as important when working across borders.

Overall, this experience clarified my long-term goal of working in an international business environment. It strengthened my desire to build a career that connects global markets while still valuing the human side of business.
